Commercial Geothermal

Building High Performance

We have successfully completed numerous commercial and institutional geothermal systems. On-time and on-budget.

Colleges, Fire Stations, Recreation Centers, Multi-family, you name it, we have done it. We understand commercial construction and we have the ability to communicate well with all the different stakeholders that are typically involved in a commercial project.

Design - Build

Thermal Creek can be engaged in an integrated Design-Build approach for your project, Design-Assist or construction only via a more traditional stipulated price contract tender process. We are flexible in the way that we work with our clients. You can learn more about our design assistance here.

Here is a video from one of our projects we did for the Salvation Army in Edmonton.

We have experience in a variety of commercial construction engagements:

Commercial Project Approach

For commercial projects, our focus tends to be on the design and construction of the geothermal ground loop heat exchanger. Together with the mechanical engineering consultant, we would discuss an appropriate scope division, distribution strategy and provide input on geothermal heat pump selections.

Depending on which phase Thermal Creek is engaged in the project, these are some of the steps involved in a successful commercial geothermal project.

01
Design phase

Conceptual Design

Once a conceptual site plan and architectural drawings are established, we can start the conversation on rough field dimensions, placement of the field and mechanical. Throughout the design process, and once a building energy model is created, a more finalized geothermal field design is presented. This design is still to be finalized 100% typically via an FTC Test.
02
Design Phase

Finalized Design

For most commercial projects, it is mandatory for us to do an in-situ formation thermal conductivity test (FTC-test). This test is more explained on our Conductivity Testing page, but essentially we drill one or more test boreholes and analyze the soil's capacity for transferring heat energy. These test results are then used to finalize the geothermal design.
03
Installation

Geothermal field installation

The geothermal field installation involves the drilling of the vertical boreholes, horizontal header fusion, and pressure and flow testing of the field. After that, we would typically install the geothermal mechanical manifold inside the building. Depending on our scope, we might continue with heat pump supply and installation. Alternatively, the mechanical contractor would connect to our manifold and continue owards.
04
commissioning

System Commissioning

The final step of the process is commissioning of the geothermal system. This includes final flushing the geothermal ground loop field. Depending on the scope of work, we may also be responsible for the introduction of the field anti-freeze. If heat pumps are installed by us, we would commissioning these and provide close-out documentation and operator training.
