King Thunderbird Centre Geothermal is part of the renovations to an existing 75,000 square foot building located at 10010 107A Avenue, located on 2.5 acres of land. The facility, operated by Boyle Street Community Services, will be known as King Thunderbird Centre and will provide housing, mental health support, and addiction counseling for 7,000 people annually.
Now completed, the new 85,600 sq. ft. okimaw peyesew kamik (King Thunderbird Centre) will expand Boyle Street Community Services reach in serving the most vulnerable communities within Edmonton, Alberta.
The geothermal ground loop field consists of 40 geothermal vertical closed loop boreholes drilled to 492ft deep each.
A total of 8 headers were constructed to optimize the fluid flow between the boreholes.

The installation of this geothermal field certainly was one of the most challenging that we have ever completed.
The site, while mostly new construction, was technically an inner-city retrofit. This meant very limited space for the drilling equipment to manoeuvre. The site also had a lot of existing underground utilities which made us feel like we had to play obstacle course with a drilling rig a lot of the times.
We did get the entire field drilled and installed on-time and on-budget.

Salvation Army’s Grace Village
Thermal Creek worked with Synergy Projects to install the geothermal ground loop heat exchanger as part of the newly constructed Grace Village project for the Salvation Army.
The Grace Village Housing Project is a 175 unit residential development in Edmonton’s Castle Downs neighborhood. It is the Salvation Army’s facility for transitional housing and other associated programs. The entire project was completed in 2023.
It is truly a marvelous facility. We were proud, but also a bit humbled to be part of building a facility that will help so many of our vulnerable people in our community.
The geothermal ground loop field consists of 40 geothermal vertical closed loop boreholes drilled to 492ft deep each. A total of 5 headers were constructed to optimize the fluid flow between the boreholes.
The geothermal is set up as a decentralized system. This means that the ground loop is essentially extended throughout the building.
A total of 106 NORDIC geothermal water-to-air ceiling mounted heat pumps deliver the heating and cooling to the different areas in the building.

The start of the project was “interesting”…
As we started drilling, we encountered heavy metal objects at around 50ft depth. Our drilling rigs were bouncing all over the place!
It turned out, and nobody was aware of this, that a long time ago, the area was used as a dumping ground for farm equipment.
We ended up ‘piloting’ all the borehole locations and subsequently using a Dual Rotary style drilling rig to get through some of these obstacles.

A Net-Zero Fire Station in Edmonton, Alberta
Thermal Creek was contracted by PCL Construction to be a part of the Net-Zero Windermere Fire Station #31 in Edmonton.
Windermere Fire Station 31 – the City of Edmonton’s first net-zero building – exemplifies thoughtful integration of the natural and built environments. It is a 1,520-square-meter facility built to serve the needs of a growing Edmonton suburb. It has bays for three fire engines as well as offices, sleeping quarters and dining areas for a crew of up to 12 firefighters.
The Fire Station’s Geothermal ground loop heat exchanger was installed by Thermal Creek. We drilled 35 boreholes to a depth of 230ft each and grouped them together in a 5 x 7 reverse return header.

The Windermere Fire Station was the first City of Edmonton Net-Zero Fire Station. Due to a fairly congested site, we had to drill the 35 boreholes at the very start of construction.
Having the header lines stick up so high into the air felt un-natural at the time, but once the site was build-up it turned out perfectly.

Geothermal for Pyrotechnic shop
A Calgary business owner recognized that building an energy efficient new shop would provide a long term competitive advantage.
This 5,000 sqft shop combines geothermal radiant heating for the main warehouse and geothermal forced air heating & cooling for the office portion.
Being somewhat remote, bringing in natural gas lines was expensive and heating with Propane is just never a good economical idea for the long term.
These factors, plus the longer terms lower footprint, made the decision for a geothermal solution and easy one for the business owner.

To meet the developers construction timelines, we actually roughed-in the geothermal header lines first.

Drilling, and fusion connections to these roughed in lines happened quite a bit later. This worked out really well.

Inner-city Geothermal House
Normally, we are a bit hesitant to heat anything outdoors with geothermal. Unlike inside a home, the outside air is “unconditioned” space and can lead to all sorts of issues with a geothermal loop field.
However, when we discussed in details the use and construction of the outdoor pool, we actually saw this as an opportunity to further enhance the geothermal efficiencies.
Much like our Roxboro project, we set up the geothermal as a simultaneous heating and cooling configuration. As a result, in the summer time, the same energy that is used to provide cooling to the house, is heating the pool simultaneously.
In other words, the pool receives free heating, from air conditioning the house!
This was the first residential project we completed with Barham Contracting. Fred Barham and his team operate on a different level compared to most builders in Calgary. The quality of design and workmanship are some of the highest we have seen in the industry and it was an absolute joy working with them on this project.

Geothermal 2.0
Taking geothermal into extreme with a simultaneous heating and cooling configuration.
This 7,500 sqft piece of contemporary art is situated right on the Elbow River.
When we first saw the design of the house, we knew we could do something very special here. Geothermal heating and cooling is all about energy transfer. We set up the geothermal system in such a way that it actually transfers energy within the house first, before using the geothermal ground loop.
As a result, during the shoulder seasons, the homeowners can actually have cooling in the bedrooms and using that same energy to heat the basement.
While this configuration is more common nowadays in commercial geothermal applications, back in 2012 this was a novelty set up.

Not so much interesting, but rather sad. The house took many years to build and finally when the owners took possession, in the Spring of 2013, the Calgary Flood of 2013 hit literally months after moving in.
Thankfully, there was no damage to any of the underground geothermal infrastructure, but the entire mechanical room had to be re-done.

The building code in Red Deer is very strict on mechanical room layout. Their rule is that every piece of equipment has to be able to be removed from the mechanical room without having to move any other piece of equipment.
While the rule sounds cumbersome, it actually made the entire project team think really hard about the layout of the room. As a result, the room looked and operated absolutely great once it was all done.

Geothermal Open Well
When faced with challenges left behind by the original contractor, Thermal Creek stepped in and turned around many of the geothermal systems for the Spring Creek development. Subsequently, Thermal Creek has been retained to perform scheduled maintenance and repairs for all geothermal systems in the development.
Spring Creek Mountain Village, also known as SCMV, is a unique development in the heart of Canmore.
The entire community sits on an abundant aquifer and as a result, the developer decided early on in the development to use a geothermal open well style system for all buildings. In essence, an open well style system uses a set of supply and discharge water-wells to perform the heat exchange with. Incredibly cost-effective, but certainly very site specific, this type of geothermal solution was the right choice for the community.
Thermal Creek was introduced to the project in 2011 when some issues around the original contracting company arose. We have been coming there ever since to perform service and maintenance on the geothermal systems.

There are many interesting facts and events regarding this community. It has been interesting to see how the geothermal installations evolved over time. The current design is a more direct exchange without the swimming pool and larger NORDIC Commercial (81-tons) Water-to-Water heat pumps.
