Geothermal 101

Heating and Cooling

In the winter, geothermal technology extracts energy from the ground to provide heating. In the summer, the system reverses and deposits heat from the house back into the ground to provide cooling.

The energy we extract from the ground is renewable and comes from the Sun. Almost 50% of the Sun’s daily energy that hits our planet is absorbed by the ground. Geothermal technology captures this energy to create a heating system which uses 80% less energy than conventional heating systems.

Most geothermal technology HVAC solutions provide:

Geothermal systems consist of 3 main components

01

Ground Heat Exchanger

image
Most commonly we install vertical or horizontal closed loop ground heat exchangers. Water plus antifreeze circulates through the ground loop system to enable energy transfer between the Earth and the building.
02

Ground Source Heat Pump

image
The ground source heat pump is located in the mechanical room and sometimes looks much like a furnace. The heat pump is connected to the ground loop and through refrigeration technology either extracts energy from the ground loop fluid (in heating mode) or deposits energy to the fluid (in cooling mode).
03

Distribution Network

Similar to conventional systems, geothermal heating and cooling can be distributed through either a forced air duct system, radiant in-floor, or a combination of both.

Typical Ground Heat Exchanger Types

Thermal Creek has experience working with all types of ground heat exchangers. Our primary design and installation focus is Vertical and Horizontal closed loop.

Vertical Closed Loop

Geothermal boreholes drilled typically anywhere between 200-500ft deep.

Horizontal Closed Loop

Trenches typically between 200-500ft long.

Efficient, Clean and Comfortable

Why Geothermal Technology?

Clean & Renewable

Rather than burning gas, propane or oil, geothermal systems (sometimes also referred to as geo-exchange or ground source heat pumps) use the Earth as heat exchanger to provide for year-round heating and cooling for virtually any type of building in any type of climate.

Geothermal Energy

Conserving our natural resources is an important mandate we all share in today’s society. Where possible, we should aim to reduce our footprint on the planet.

Many builders and developers are already recognizing that the trend in construction is towards Net-Zero Energy (NZE) or Near-Net-Zero Energy buildings.

Geothermal technology offers a sustainable and better alternative compared to the conventional burning of fossil fuels to heat a home, office, school, warehouse…essentially any type of building.

Geothermal can eliminate your natural gas, oil or propane usage, create tangible energy savings every month, and provide superior comfort and safety.

Consider these typical energy usage scenarios:

For residential, on average about 83% of total energy usage goes towards Heating, Cooling and Hot Water.

For commercial buildings, on average about 68% of total energy usage goes towards Heating, Cooling and Hot Water.

Geothermal HVAC systems can reduce energy consumption for heating, cooling and hot water by up to 80%.

As a result, overall building energy savings well into the 60% range are achieved.

Clean

No Combustion, No Silent Killer.

Carbon monoxide (sometimes referred to as CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning material containing carbon (such as natural gas). Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause brain damage and death. You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it; but carbon monoxide can kill you. Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, and an estiamted 60 Canadians die every year from what is commonly referred to as the ‘Silent Killer’.

A geothermal heating system has no combustion and as such produces no Carbon Monoxide. With geothermal you can eliminate the risk of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

Comfortable

Better air quality, less allergens.

Our geothermal forced air systems circulate twice the amount of air compared to a regular furnace. This reduces hot & cold pockets in the house, and creates a more comfortable environment.

There is no combustion, so we leave more humidity in the air and need less outdoor air intake. Less outdoor air intake means less allergens and pollutants inside your home.

Indoor air quality in the home plays a major role in your respiratory health, particularly if you suffer from asthma or allergies. The optimal heating system for someone with allergies or asthma would limit exposure to the by-products of burning wood or fossil fuels. Geothermal heating systems are highly recommended by the American Lung Association for people suffering from asthma or allergies.
